EGR Student Laptop Pilot Program
We believe that students will use laptop type technology in the future. As prices continue to fall, we foresee student wireless devices becoming as common as cell phones. A laptop in school allows students fingertip access to information on the Internet. Additionally, most students compose at a keyboard more efficiently than on paper. A laptop facilitates this much more conveniently than on our limited number of district-owned machines. Many students are able to organize themselves better on an electronic device than on a paper calendar or planner. As students work more and more digitally, we see laptops in school as something we need to plan for and get right as a school district.
A Student Laptop Advisory Group consisting of parents, students, and teachers met over the months of November and December in 2005. The charge to this group was to take the survey results and investigate the possibility of a student laptop program in our district. The group concluded that a limited pilot would allow the district to test systems and policies.
CDWG has agreed to set up a program for district families to purchase discounted hardware and software. This purchase program is open to K-12 staff and students and offers education/government pricing. The district has no financial ties to CDWG, Symantec, Microsoft, Targus, IBM, or Lenovo.
