Text Box: Title I funding is provided through a federally funded grant awarded by the State of Michigan. The district applies for this each year. Qualifications and criteria change often and we adjust as necessary. Most schools qualify for funding, East Grand Rapids qualifies for a small amount, which we use to the best of our ability. Students who scored at the basic or apprentice level on the MEAP qualify for Title I support. Title I does not take place of the student’s core class.

The amount of money given to schools is based upon the “poverty rate”. In the past, EGR’s “poverty rate” concentrated at Breton School. This year it shifted over to the EGR Middle School and so did the program.

Programming is based upon assessment, core content needs and the amount of money needed to support a teacher for the Title I program.

It is important to understand that the Title I program concentrates on helping students learn regular education material and grades come from their core classes. The program is intended to be short term for students who need additional support in a content area. This year the program model has changed. The new look of Title 1 is using the Fast ForWord tool.

Fast ForWord, has been created to support and strengthen the literacy skills of identified students in preparation for middle school classes. Fast ForWord is an intervention strategy that builds processing skills needed for reading and comprehension. Research on this program shows that in order to make significant progress students must participate daily for one class period for 12 weeks. We will design a schedule where a student will attend Fast ForWord on a rotating basis during their elective time. Classes will have a maximum of five students.
