HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!! READ A ZILLION BOOKS!!!!!!!!
Principally Speaking Dear Lakeside Families –
Hopefully as you are just beginning to enjoy the rhythm of the summer, you take a moment to celebrate all the successes of the school year!! We all enjoyed watching your children grow and learn throughout the year. Knowing that over the next week and a half, I will be attending several administrative meetings to finalize staffing assignments. Consequently, in the June 28th addition of the Pride, I will give you a staff update as well as important dates for your calendar. In the meantime, enjoy the warmth of the summer and READ A ZILLION BOOKS!
Until next time..........Linda Kehm
Dear Lakeside Families, I want to let you let you know that I’ll be retiring at the end of this school year and I’d like to take this time to wish you all well and to thank you for the opportunity that I’ve had to be part of your children’s lives. I’ve watched them grow and mature and move on to the next phase in their lives and it’s always a tug at my heart when each family “graduates” from Lakeside to the Middle School. I remember that change with my own kids and as hard as it is to leave one building and move on to the next there is so much excitement too. I feel that now as I leave Lakeside to pursue the next chapter in my life; it is bittersweet to leave all of you and the wonderful staff here at Lakeside but I am very excited at what lies ahead…for all of us. I wish you all the best! I will miss all of you. Best Wishes, Chris Hnatowsky
Summer Reading For Graduated 1st Grade Students Attention ! Attention !! Students finishing 1st grade will find a special bookcase downstairs at the East Grand Rapids Public Library with books that are just right for them for summer reading. Lakeside’s Reading Team has been working with the EGR librarians over the last few years to set up a summer bookcase of both fiction and nonfiction books that are within the reading range of students finishing 1st grade. Some books will be fun and easy summer reading; others may have a bit more challenge. It is guaranteed that students will find books that they want to read. So, go to the library and READ A ZILLION BOOKS! Your Lakeside Reading Team

Kindness Counts Award Lakeside's own Spencer Swaney won the 2010 Kindness Counts Award and its $1,000 scholarship this spring. Lakeside students raise money for this award through February's Heart to Heart drive. The award is given to a high school senior who shows extra kindness and compassion to fellow students The winner is chosen on the basis of an essay and application.
At Lakeside, Spencer helped others through the Circle of Friends. In middle school, he mentored younger boys through the GEARS program. In high school, Spencer provided leadership as captain of the lacrosse team and helped Lakeside kids as a cadet teacher. Both in and out of the classroom and activities, he included others particularly those who needed a friend or a sympathetic ear. Spencer will attend Michigan State and study early education.

Hearts of Gold – Playing for Health and Happiness Join Lakeside Elementary and your EGR community to support the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in our 2nd annual benefit football game against Holland Friday September 10, 2010. Make a difference in the lives of kids in our community and show that kindness counts here in EGR! Numerous organizations within the EGR school system are participating in the Hearts of Gold benefit. What we would like to do here at Lakeside is begin a program called “POTS OF GOLD” We would like the students to use their entrepreneurial skills over the summer, host a car wash, bake sale, lemonade stand, do extra household chores, any way in which they can collect funds and add it to their personal “Pot’s of Gold” A Sticker was sent home with each student and we ask that they be creative in finding their own container in which to decorate and collect their coins. We have set the date for the Lakeside Golden Potluck for September 8, 5:30- 7 pm, which will be when everyone can bring their money to school, join in some back to school celebration, and place their coins into our Lakeside community Pots of Gold. Any questions please contact Beth Milanowski (beth@grtrolley.com) or Julie VanGessel (julievanessel.sbcglobal.net)
State of Michigan School Aid Update http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2010/06/state_sen_jansen_state_may_use.html
According to recent Grand Rapids Press articles, the State of Michigan may have more money in the School Aid Fund than they had anticipated in January 2004. To our dismay, our State of Michigan Legislators, including Senator Mark Jansen, are considering taking money out of the School Aid Fund to pay for other items in the budget. Although we feel strongly that Community Colleges need to be funded (Senator Jansen suggests paying for Community Colleges with School Aid dollars), the School Aid Fund was approved by voters in 1994 under Proposal A for the purpose of funding K-12 schools. We need to ask our legislators to leave the School Aid Fund for K-12 schools and to fully fund it by June 30, 2010 so that our schools can get their business done without guessing, borrowing and having mid-year cuts next year. Take a look at the letters below. Please consider pasting them into an email and sending them to our legislators. They do listen when they hear from us. We need to work together!! Please follow updates on the Legislative Committee blog: www.egrpseducationadvocates.blogspot.com Thanks--Lucy Lafleur

Dear Senator Jansen-- I have learned that the School Aid Fund may have more money than anticipated in January 2010. While this is very good news for our schools, I have also learned that some unwise decisions are being considered in Lansing regarding the utilization of these funds for areas of the budget that do not have to do with schools. Please resist this and vote against the use of the School Aid fund for anything other than funding our K-12 public schools. Regards from an East Grand Rapids Voter,
