For a school “job” assigned by his teacher at the start of the year, Porter was put in charge of making sure the bird feeders in the courtyard are filled.

Once a month, behind closed doors in a conference room at Lakeside Elementary, a cadre of students convenes to tackle the big questions facing the school.

East Grand Rapids junior Zoe Cunningham had the opportunity to speak on a panel of Kent County students who shared their thoughts and feelings about what it’s like to be a high-school student with about 300 educators and community members during Kent ISD’s “Listen. Learn. Lead: State of the Student” event at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.
