Clubs
East Grand Rapids Public Schools is proud to have a robust offering of clubs across grade levels. We believe in providing opportunities for students beyond the academic classroom so students have the ability to explore a range of interests. A few of these clubs are highlighted below. Full lists of clubs offered at the middle and high school level may be found on the Additional Clubs tab.
ESports
MIDDLE
The Middle School ESports Club provides students the opportunity to connect with their peers and enjoy playing a few video games in a competitive format against other middle schoolers throughout the state of Michigan via a new middle school league umbrellaed under MHSEL (Michigan High School Esports League).
HIGH
Esports is a competitive video game club where students use their skills in their favorite video game to compete against other high schools in the state of Michigan. Our program is part of the Michigan High School Esports Federation (MIHSEF) League where we compete either during the Fall and/or Spring in various title such as Fortnite, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. & Valorant.
Model UN
Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate high school participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations’ agenda. Participants role-play as diplomats representing a nation or nongovernmental organization in a simulated session of a United Nations committee, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. Individuals research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. Some conferences also allow students to participate in “special” or “crisis” committees, which go outside the scope of the United Nations and are often centered around historical topics or current events.
Robotics
East Grand Rapids Public Schools offers opportunities for students in grades 1-12 to engage in FIRST Robotics. When participating in this extracurricular club, students learn teamwork, coding, and problem solving as they explore real-world problems. Students who participate in FIRST Robotics are often sought after by colleges and universities due to their extensive experience from the program in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education.

High School
Middle School
Students in grades 6-8 participate in FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) competitions. Our EGRMS FTC Team is #15510 and they design, build and program an 18”x18”x18” robot to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are built from a reusable platform powered by android technology and are then coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming.
Elementary School
FIRST Lego League (FLL), in grades 1-5 is hosted in small groups where our youngest learners experiment and grow their confidence, critical thinking, teamwork, and design skills through hands-on learning. Last year, over 150 EGRPS 1-5 students participated in FLL. Parent volunteer coaches and mentors are a critical component of all our FIRST Robotics teams and we are deeply grateful for this partnership.
Science Olympiad
MIDDLE
The EGRMS Science Olympiad Team focuses on 23 different events. Some of these events are "minds-on" where students study a variety of science topics including chemistry, physics, biology, earth science, and several other topics related to science, technology, and engineering. Other events are "hands-on" where students construct devices such as trebuchets, airplanes, roller coasters, vehicles, etc. Our goal is to provide students with opportunities to explore topics of their choice depending on their interests. Some students choose to focus on one event while others focus on several. Students typically have event meetings every week from January through April and have the opportunity to compete in regional and state competitions.
HIGH
The EGRHS Science Olympiad team studies and prepares for 23 different 'event' topics each year that touch on a wide range of knowledge and skills in science and engineering, from studying diseases and human physiology, to practicing forensics and laboratory chemistry experimentation, to constructing and testing mechanical devices. Team members have opportunities to compete at tournaments throughout the school year that incorporate each event to test their skills against students from schools from throughout Michigan, but participating in competitions is not required. Our team goal is to facilitate each team member's exploration of their individual interests in science and engineering with whatever time they are able to commit to studying, building, and participating in the events of their choosing.
Student Council
MIDDLE
The East Grand Rapids Middle School Student Council is a student-run organization dedicated to providing leadership opportunities. All students are welcome to join the Student Council. Each year, several students are elected by their peers to serve on the Executive Board within the Student Council. This board collaborates with the Student Council Advisor to plan meetings and implement Council decisions. Major events supported by the Student Council include Spirit Assemblies, Homecoming and Kabookie Week festivities, community donation drives, and more.
HIGH
The East Grand Rapids High School Student Council is a leadership organization of dedicated student leaders focused on enhancing the school community. Comprising representatives from various grades, the council works to foster school spirit, organize events, and serves as a voice for students' concerns and ideas. Through collaboration with faculty and peers, they aim to create a positive environment that promotes engagement and inclusivity among all students. Members work collaboratively to enhance the school community through activities, initiatives, and service projects, with a focus on fostering a positive and inclusive environment.
We The People
We the People engages high school students in a curriculum designed to foster understanding of the institutions of American democracy, including the Constitution with a specialization in the Bill of Rights. Culminating activities feature a simulated congressional hearing in which students “testify” before a panel of volunteer attorneys, educators, and civic leaders.
