English Language Learners (ELL)
Learning another language can be very challenging. At East Grand Rapids Public Schools, children who speak a language other than English in their home, or have a different native language, are given the opportunity to enrich their learning with a highly qualified teacher of English Language Learners (ELL). Individual and group support is provided to help our students become acclimated both socially and academically. We strive to enrich the student's learning experience in a warm and personal learning environment.
If you have any questions about ELL services in East Grand Rapids Public Schools, please call 235-3535.
Parent Information
Academic support is offered by East Grand Rapids Public Schools to all K-12 students who speak a language other than English in their home. A highly qualified teacher works with students individually and in groups to help them be successful in school, assimilate into our culture, and learn to communicate using the English language. The ELL teacher will work with a student's classroom teachers toward meeting district grade level expectations. Services for English Language Learners (ELL) are provided in each of our schools and students at all levels of proficiency are welcomed.
Students are given an initial screening (WIDA Screener) to determine if they qualify for ELL services and assess the level of support needed. Language proficiency is evaluated each spring by the State of Michigan English Language Proficiency (WIDA-Access) test. Students continue to receive ELL services until they test out of services based on the spring WIDA-Access test as well as meeting grade level expectations.
